Detailed Description of 20.10.v4-The New Patient Orthodontic Exam-Parts 1-5Intended Audience and Prerequisites
The Intended Audience for this course are dentists, dental hygienists, orthodontists, orthodontic assistants, and dental students who should know how to examine a patient to orthodontically assess the orthodontic treatment needs of a patient. Prerequisites for this course should be covered in the training programs for dental students, dental hygiene students, dental assisting students and other dental practitioner students.
Suggested prerequisites for other types of students are college level courses in writing, basic sciences including human anatomy and physiology, and basic math. Students should be proficient in English.
Course Content of 20.10.v4-The New Patient Orthodontic Exam-Parts 1-5
This course trains the dental practitioner to comprehensively orthodontically examine a patient, regardless of the patient’s age. There are 5 Parts to the exam that are described in more detail in the Course Description:
- Patient History and Interview
- Radiographic Exam
- Facial, Smile, and Profile Exam including the bony structures of the head and neck
- Dental, Periodontal, TMJ, Habits Exam
- Orthodontic Dental Relationships Exam
The Educational Goal and Objectives for 20.10.v4-The New Patient Orthodontic Exam-Parts 1-5:
Goal - The goal of this course is to train the learner in the steps of conducting a New Patient Orthodontic Exam. This exam is more comprehensive rather than just being focused on the occlusion. Before a decision is made about the treatment that a patient needs, the practitioner has to have a general idea about the overall orthodontic condition of the patient.
Objectives - At the conclusion of this course the learner will:
- Interview the patient obtaining the patient’s history, concerns, and other general information.
- Examine the patient orthodontically using the OrthoTraining Orthodontic New Patient Exam Form or a digital version of this form.
- Develop a general idea about the treatment needs of the patient and case difficulty so that the practitioner can determine when to observe the patient, treat the patient, or refer the patient to a specialist.
- Discuss with the patient orthodontic treatment that will address the patient’s concerns and include treatment recommendations.
