The OrthoTraining Orthodontic Assistant 60-Day Apprenticeship Program

OrthoTraining courses are designed to train one individual at a time within the practice or to train a group of individuals all at the same time within the practice. How?

This OrthoTraining program combines detailed interactive online presentations that teach course objectives and then measure this learning of the objectives by specially-designed Knowledge Quizzes. Each student’s online learning activities are “click-tracked” generating individualized student data that is automatically analyzed into “grades” that are summarized on a Student Dashboard Report. All individual student grading of online progress is automated and reported online by the system.

Each online course is immediately followed by a hands-on training session where students learn to perform procedures to the highest standard by using detailed checklists that have already been taught in the online presentations. Usually, the practice trainer is the Mentor for this program and monitors student online progress using Student Dashboard Reports. As students complete the online courses, the Mentor also gives the hands-on training and may upload to the student’s OrthoTraining account the individual’s recorded successful performance of a hands-on procedure (following the step-by-step checklists and quality control checklists).

How is this part of “The OrthoTraining Orthodontic Assistant 60-Day Apprenticeship Program”?

How the Orthodontic Assistant 60-Day Apprenticeship Program works..
The OrthoTraining Orthodontic Assistant 60-Day Apprenticeship Program

This program trains individuals to place braces, change orthodontic wires, assess patient progress, adjust a patient’s orthodontic appliance following the doctor’s instructions, and safely remove the braces and place retainers under the doctor’s supervision. The first step is to train the Orthodontic Assistant Mentor.
Steps-Mentor Selection and Training for Orthodontic Assistant 60-day Apprenticeship Program

Step 1-Train the Mentor-The first step to start the OrthoTraining’s Orthodontic Assistant 60-day Apprenticeship Program within the practice is to “Train the Trainer” who will be the “Mentor” in the practice administering the program and supervising the learners. How do you do this?

  • Mentor Selection-An employee experienced in chairside orthodontic assistant procedures (and has state licensure if required) should be selected to be the Mentor to train other employees in the practice. First, this “Student Mentor” must learn what is taught in the OrthoTraining courses. (The Student Orthodontic Assistant Mentor Training Program is still under development)
  • The student creates an OrthoTraining Student Account.
  • The student then subscribes to take the Orthodontic Assistant 60-day Apprenticeship Program with Dr. Rebecca Poling as Faculty and pays the course fee.
  • The Student Mentor orders the Orthodontic Assistant Mentor Workbook. This workbook has all the materials about the courses including course scripts, course descriptions, course checklists, and other special documents the Mentor will need.
  • The Student Mentor and Dr. Rebecca Poling meet on zoom video to discuss the Mentor training program.
  • The Student Mentor receives from Dr. Poling the Orthodontic Assistant 60-Day Apprenticeship Program Schedule that will guide the student in completing the program. The Student Mentor will meet each week with Dr. Poling on zoom.
  • Student Mentor Completes the Online Courses and Hands-on Training: The Student Mentor completes the online courses and practices performing all hands-on procedures in the office using the OrthoTraining checklists under the guidance of the local orthodontist. The Student Mentor may be evaluated by Dr. Poling via a virtual meeting in the correct performance of procedures.
  • Student Mentor Certification-When Dr. Poling certifies that the Student Mentor has completed the OrthoTraining Orthodontic Assistant 60-day Apprenticeship Program, the student will receive a Certificate of Completion of the OrthoTraining Orthodontic Assistant Mentor Course.
  • The OrthoTraining OAP Mentor then subscribes to the OrthoTraining Orthodontic Assistant Mentor Account. With this Mentor Account, the Orthodontic Assistant Mentor can subscribe NEW students who will take the Orthodontic Assistant 60-day Apprenticeship Program under the supervision of this Orthodontic Assistant Mentor.
  • The Mentor has digital access to all Mentoring files and documents that the Mentor will need to prepare the practice for training and to email the new orthodontic assistant students.
